Once again the government has chosen on Princes’ Day not to distribute the wealth of our country more fairly. We, two million workers with an income of from well under to €14 per hour, people on social security and senior citizen pensions, can scarcely make ends meet. We call on you with this letter of appeal to listen to us and to make sure that there is a decent minimum wage of €14 per hour.
Riches are not shared fairly in the Netherlands. €10 an hour is just enough, sometimes just not enough, to make ends meet and forces us to depend on subsidies for rent, health care and care for our children. To go on holiday or even on a day trip with our children is a luxury that for the most part we cannot afford. We end up in isolation, have no affordable means of transport, we cannot take part in society. And all this while society depends on the work that we do.
This government does not rule for us. It keeps 2 billion by not lowering tax on profits. Instead of using this money to provide a better income for the people who are most in need of it, it chooses to give this money to large companies. The companies receive billions of euros in support, without any conditions. The profits made by Albert Heijn and bol.com reach hitherto unknown heights, while supermarket workers and distribution workers see nothing of this money. They only receive applause.
Together with ever more people in the Netherlands we want a higher minimum wage. We want for everyone to be able to take part in society. We have the right to the riches that make the Netherlands a special country. Therefore we call on you by means of this letter of appeal to choose our side: the side of the cleaners, the people that deliver the post and the health workers. Make sure that the minimum wage is raised to €14 per hour! We want to live instead of just exist.
With our best wishes,
In October we are presenting this petition to the House of Representatives.
